ToneDexter 2: ULTIMATE REVIEW for Violin, Viola, and Cello players!
After months of use live and in the studio, I’m excited to announce at long last our review of Tone Dexter 2
Unlike the work we do with pickups, mics there is SO MUCH VARIABILITY when it comes to testing a unit like this, and we did our best to leverage all of our comprehensive experience with making Irs for the past 10 years to deliver what we think is the definitive review of this unit.
We tested violins and cellos with different pickup and mic combinations at various distances and even shot the unit out with the original Tone Dexter.
If you want to download all the audio files from this review and bonus testing from these sessions (mic/raw pickup and processed with Tone Dexter) come jo...

Ampero 2 Stage allows the same or better inputs/functionality + much more for much less than 1300 $ - it's around 700$. It also can load acoustic IR's... It's about the same price as Tonedexter.

I've been using my TD II with my fiddle and mandolin for around a week now and am very happy with it. It will replace two LR Baggs Para DI's and two clean boost pedals as all is handled with the TD. The included option of blending with a mic and pickup (not using a WaveMap) is a nice option to have. I am using a Baggs bridge pu on fiddle and Baggs Radius pu on mando, thanks James!

These effects units are also good for synths and voice. I bought all three types without the pedal for some added spice. The best part of these pedals is that you have full control over tempo/bpm and can adjust on the fly on the computer. These units are great!

I’m considering something like this to go with my Taylor 214, primarily through to a DAW for recording. I was wondering if it’s really more for live than DAW recording use. Also I had sort of leaned towards the Nux Optima Air as there has been some good demos but I’ll definitely re-evaluate at this point.

I bought a small battery on Amazon for around $30 that should power the TD2 for at least 6 hours, so the power consumption issue isn't really an issue with the battery topic mentioned.

Do you think these Mics are too noisy for Studio work? 23 DPA seems very noisy. I'm into music like Alvin Lucier and Elaine radigue, very quiet delicate classical drone music. And stuff like taku sugimoto which has lots of Silence in the compositions I've been working on extended techniques with my ebow and acoustic guitar that can't be amplfied by normal guitar pickups i was hoping these mics would work but 23dba of self-noise seems too much. Does anyone have any experience with super quiet delicate music and these mics?

this device is amazing. I just used it on a yamaha SLB 300, I modeled my real acoustic bass with a mic and then mix this with the slb pickup. Even the first attempt sounded WAY better than the build-in modelings from yamaha, at least in my opinion. Part of this is that the tonedexter has decent EQ-ing. The other key element is the ability to control the spaciousness. (no, I didn't know what this is either, but it is explained very well and the moment you turn this knob you get it). It turns out I like to remove or nearly remove the spaciousness from my amplified bass sound..it's just not what I am looking for when mixing in the microphone

Nice video over all. The two mics sound very similar to my ears on every video that I watch. The sound and editing of the voices was a bit irritating, though. Jacobs voice is way louder (sometimes slightly distorting?) than the other two and end of sentences got chopped of too early in a few instances.

Check out the ACS Live range of in-ears with the Ambient Processor pack - the combo seems very similar to this Sensaphonics system. I've never tried the Sensaphonics but I'm pretty damn happy with my ACS Live. It was a total game changer compared with on-stage monitors - for the first time ever I could hear the band/audience AND myself at the same time, so I completely agree with you that this is the way to go :)

It truly is a breath of fresh air to see an honest review without all the BS. I think you 3 hit the nail on the head when you said it wasn't the same as using your favorite gear, but it does have it's uses. I have found that it really doesn't matter how much a person spends on effects, somewhere along the line it will have it's faults for different applications. Take for example a guitarist. If they are trying to play Hendrix, using a classical or flamenco guitar will not produce the desired effect. Even though the classical/flamenco guitar cost 10 times more than Hendrix's guitar, it will never sound like Hendrix. Same thing goes for trying to emulate Yo Yo Ma with a viola. Some of the multi effect units do some things great and other things not so great. It's just the nature of the beast. The Zoom pedal does however offer a beginner a starting point and maybe even a few useful bits and pieces for advanced players. Far from perfect, but the thought was there. My apologies for the rambling diatribe.

I don't have the TD2 yet, I have the TD1, but the first things I noticed are the mid control and the recallability of the settings. I'm doing acoustic guitar, irish bouzouki, and tenor banjo now all in the same concert so this will be great to get.

I haven’t finished watching, but I’m just hearing about the midi features. I am wondering if midi control change is supported for the headphone out volume? The Neumann definitely sounds better (flatter, smoother, deeper lows) but that comes at the cost of a little more handling noise in the low end, which you might need to filter out. Overal I prefer the sound of the Neumann.
